About Diani Airport

What is Diani Airport?

Diani Airport (Ukunda Airport, UKA) — the closest airport to Diani Beach on Kenya's south coast

Diani Airport is the traveller-facing name for Ukunda Airport, a regional airport near Diani Beach in Kwale County, Kenya. It is the closest air access point for Diani, Ukunda, Tiwi, Galu, Kinondo, Msambweni, Chale Island, Shimoni and Wasini.

Unlike Mombasa Moi International Airport, which handles the coast’s larger and international traffic, Diani specialises in scheduled domestic flights, safari connections and charters. Its value is proximity — landing you a short transfer from the beach rather than across the Likoni ferry from Mombasa.

The airport was renamed from Ukunda Airstrip to Diani Airport by the Kenya Civil Aviation Authority, effective 25 April 2019, following a new control tower and a tourism strategy to strengthen Diani as a beach destination. In aviation and booking systems it is still widely listed as Ukunda.

It is managed by the Kenya Airports Authority (KAA) as operator, and regulated by the Kenya Civil Aviation Authority (KCAA) for safety and air-navigation oversight.

Airport comparison

Diani Airport vs Mombasa Airport

The coast has two airports for very different needs. Here’s how to choose.

UKA

Use Diani Airport if…

Your stay is in Diani, Galu, Tiwi or nearby south-coast accommodation
You want the shortest airport-to-beach transfer (~14 min to central Diani)
You’re flying Nairobi → Diani or connecting safari → beach via Wilson
You want to avoid the Likoni ferry and Mombasa traffic
Most south-coast travellers should search UKA first — it’s the closest practical airport to Diani Beach.
MBA

Use Mombasa Airport if…

🛬You need more flight options or cheaper / better-timed fares
🛬You’re an international arrival into the coast
🛬Your itinerary includes Mombasa, Nyali, Bamburi, Watamu or Malindi
🛬You have bulky luggage or Ukunda seats are full
Mombasa Moi International is ~30 km north of Diani and needs a road transfer (often via the Likoni ferry).

Traveller essentials

What every Diani Airport passenger should know

Four things that catch first-time visitors out — and how to avoid them.

🔎

Search “UKA”, not “Diani”

“Diani Airport” rarely appears on booking platforms. Use UKA, Ukunda, or Diani Beach, Ukunda to find flights.

⏱️

Arrive 60–90 minutes early

It’s a small airport, but check-in deadlines still apply. Allow more time in high season or with sports gear.

🧳

Pack soft bags for safari legs

If your trip includes a small-aircraft safari flight, pack to the strictest baggage limit in the itinerary and avoid hard suitcases.

📲

Arrange your pickup in advance

Give your driver your airline, flight number, arrival time, name, phone and final hotel — this avoids confusion between Diani, Ukunda and Mombasa.

Common questions

Diani Airport — frequently asked questions

The questions travellers ask most before flying into UKA.

Yes. They are the same airport. It is located at Ukunda, so the aviation name is Ukunda Airport (or Ukunda Airstrip), while Diani Airport is the tourism name used because it serves Diani Beach. Its codes are UKA (IATA) and HKUK (ICAO).
Search UKA or Ukunda. “Diani Airport” often doesn’t appear on platforms like Skyscanner, which list the airport under Ukunda / UKA.
Yes. It’s about 5.2 km from Diani Beach via Diani Beach Road — roughly a 14-minute drive — making it the closest airport for scheduled air access. Mombasa Moi International is the larger alternative ~30 km north.
Operators associated with UKA include Jambojet (from JKIA), Safarilink and Skyward Express (from Nairobi Wilson), Mombasa Air Safari, 748 Air Services, and private/charter operators. Schedules vary by season and demand.
Use JKIA if you’re connecting from an international arrival there. Use Wilson if you’re coming from a safari or other Wilson-based domestic flight. If your international flight lands at JKIA but your Diani flight leaves Wilson, allow plenty of time to transfer across Nairobi.
Yes, but most scheduled safari-to-Diani journeys route through Nairobi Wilson: Maasai Mara airstrip → Wilson → Diani / Ukunda. The same pattern applies to Amboseli, Samburu, Lewa and other circuits. Some private charters arrange more direct routing.
Generally no. UKA has no customs/immigration, so most international visitors arrive via JKIA Nairobi or Mombasa, then connect to Ukunda by domestic flight or road. Treat it as a domestic/regional airport.
It is not a 24-hour airport — confirm operating hours with your airline. Upgrades have been discussed (runway extension, apron, control tower, fire/rescue), and if customs facilities were added it could one day support regional routes to Zanzibar, Arusha or Dar es Salaam. For now, book on published schedules.
Diani Airport (UKA · HKUK) — Kwale County, Kenya

The south coast’s fly-in gateway to Diani Beach

Diani Airport — officially Ukunda Airport — is best understood as a compact regional airport built around convenience. Its defining role is not scale: it is proximity to Diani Beach, scheduled Nairobi connections, and safari-to-beach access via Wilson. For most south-coast travellers, UKA is the airport to search first.
